Sponge cake with wholemeal flour (and without added sugar!)

Who does not want a good homemade cake, but without thinking about calories? Today we show you how to make a cake with wholemeal flour, and without added sugar! Or what is the same, a snack with good nutritional content and low in calories.

Most sweets are made with refined flours and added sugars, but we will not use sweeteners (although you can). You will see that you have different options so you can do it with what you have at home, and you do not have to go expressly to the supermarket. Mind you, don't sift whole wheat flour! Just stir it a little with the fork to add a little air.

Do you have plain yogurt? Brilliant! But if not, you can also use Greek yogurt, 0% fat smoothie, cow's milk or a vegetable drink. In fact, if you want, you can choose fruit instead of dairy. You just have to choose a ripe banana (and crush it) or a roasted apple.

Is this wholemeal cake going to be bland? It depends. If you add lemon essence and pieces of pure chocolate, it will be delicious! If you don't add anything to it, you can then drop a little nut butter on top to give it more flavor.


  • 125 grams of plain yogurt (smoothie, Greek yogurt)
  • 3 eggs
  • 360 grams of wholemeal flour
  • Vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • The zest of a lemon (or lemon essence)
  • Chocolate chips and nuts (optional)


Whisk the eggs with the yogurt

In a bowl, add the plain yogurt. Go incorporating the eggs one by one, while moving the mixture until it is homogeneous.

Add the coconut oil

Add the melted coconut oil, along with the vanilla and cinnamon essence. It is the moment to also incorporate the lemon zest. Mix everything until it is completely integrated.

Add the whole flour

Pour the whole flour little by little, and make enveloping movements so that it mixes correctly. Also add the baking powder.

If you dare to add chocolate chips or nuts, it's time.

To the mold!

Pour the dough into a mold of some greased with oil or put it on a vegetable paper.

And baked!

Put the wholemeal cake in the oven, for 40-45 minutes at 180ºC. As each oven is special, check that it does not burn and that the toothpick comes out clean when testing. Maybe you need a little more time.
